Immersion Brew Full Body Beginner Friendly

What is French Press?

French press is a full-immersion brewing method: coffee grounds steep directly in hot water, then a metal mesh plunger separates the grounds from the finished brew. Because no paper filter is used, natural coffee oils pass freely into the cup, producing a rich, full-bodied, and robust coffee with a satisfying weight on the palate.

✦ Best for: Medium to dark roasts, bold and earthy coffees, those who enjoy a thick, weighty cup.

What You'll Need

  • French press (350ml, 600ml, or 1L)
  • Coarsely ground coffee — burr grinder preferred
  • Kettle
  • Kitchen scale (recommended) or tablespoon measure
  • Timer
  • Wooden spoon or stirring stick

Brew Parameters

Parameter Recommended
Coffee dose 30g (for 500ml water)
Water amount 500ml
Ratio 1:16 (coffee : water by weight)
Water temperature 92–95°C (197–203°F)
Grind size Coarse — like cracked pepper or coarse sea salt
Steep time 4 minutes

Step-by-Step Brew Guide

Step 1 — Preheat

  1. Pour hot water into your empty French press, swirl, and discard. This stabilizes temperature and prevents your brew from cooling too quickly during the steep.

Step 2 — Add coffee

  1. Add 30g of coarsely ground coffee to the warm press.

  2. Give it a gentle shake to level the grounds.

Step 3 — Bloom & saturate (0:00)

  1. Start your timer. Pour about 60ml of water (double the coffee weight) to saturate all grounds evenly.

  2. Wait 30 seconds, then pour the remaining water to reach 500ml total.

  3. Give a gentle stir with a wooden spoon to ensure all grounds are fully wet.

Step 4 — Place lid & steep (0:30 – 4:00)

  1. Place the lid on top with the plunger pulled all the way up. Do not press yet.

  2. Allow to steep for a total of 4 minutes from first pour.

☕ Pro Tip

Don't rush the plunge. Press slowly and steadily over 20–30 seconds. Pressing hard and fast creates bitter, gritty flavors and stirs up sediment.

Step 5 — Plunge & serve (4:00)

  1. Press the plunger down slowly and evenly until it reaches the bottom.

  2. Pour immediately. Don't leave finished coffee sitting on the grounds — it will over-extract and turn bitter.

Ratio Guide

Coffee Water Yield in Cup
18g 300ml ~270ml (small press)
30g 500ml ~450ml (medium press)
42g 700ml ~630ml (large press)
60g 1000ml ~900ml (full 1L press)

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely Cause Fix
Gritty / muddy cup Grind too fine Use a coarser grind
Bitter aftertaste Over-steeped Reduce steep time to 3:30
Weak / watery Not enough coffee Increase dose or try 1:14 ratio
Coffee cools fast Skipped preheat Always preheat the press
Grounds in cup Plunged too fast Press slowly, let settle before pouring

🌟 Beginner Tip

French press is forgiving and low-tech — the perfect introduction to manual brewing. Fresh coarse grounds, 4-minute steep, slow plunge. That's really all there is to it.
